Reverse chronology:

Mississauga News article (May 16, 2010): Marathon sets new records.  Excerpt: "Kenyan runners Daniel Njenga and Philip Rotich may have finished 29 seconds apart in the 7th annual Canon Mississauga Marathon this morning, but you could still call it a photo finish.  Njenga completed the 42-kilometre race in a record time of 2:20:37 and once Rotich crossed the finish line at 2:21:06, the runners joined Kenyan Community of Ontario board member Brodie Osome in a hug while hoisting their nation's flag.  Over 14,000 participants registered for eight races in this year's event, eclipsing last year's record of some 12,000.  Allison Hobeika of Newfoundland finished first amongst women competitors, with a time of 3:08:42.  Cambridge's Julie Cummings was second to cross the line at 3:10:11 while Daniela Fiumara of Italy finished third at 3:12:12."

Mississauga News article (May 11, 2010): Runners gear up for marathon.  Excerpt: "This weekend, some 12,000 runners will invade Mississauga for the seventh annual Mississauga Marathon.  Eight races are slated for Saturday and Sunday, with the 42.2-kilometre Canon Marathon – a certified Boston Marathon qualifier - and Sure-Gro Half Marathon beginning Sunday at 7:30 a.m.  Other Sunday events include the Corporate and Team Relay (7:30 a.m.) and the Bell 2K Family Fun Run/Walk (12:30 p.m.).  Runners will cross the finish line at Memorial Park in Port Credit instead of Lakefront Promenade, where the race has ended the past six years. ... About 2,000 people have signed up for the [full marathon] race."

Mississauga News editorial (Feb. 25, 2010): Run needs support.  Excerpt: "Toronto City Council’s decision to force a four-month separation between the two marathons that snake through its streets every fall could cause real hardship for Mississauga’s own marathon. ... The Mississauga Marathon, still in relative infancy, boasted 12,000 runners last year, with a healthy show of participation from dozens of countries, while the Goodlife Marathon [in Toronto] drew a couple of thousand more runners in its 16th event.  A great many of those runners now will be forced to choose between the two races.  With the Toronto option first on the calendar, the Mississauga Marathon could most feel the pinch. ... Still, the Landmark [Mississauga] race is backed by some strong positives — a scenic route, an army of volunteers, a greater likelihood of better weather and an established time slot."

February 24, 2010: The final revisions to the 2010 Mississauga Marathon route went to Council and received approval.  Click here to view the Council Agenda (see p5).  Click to view the Corporate Staff Report dated  Feb. 12, 2010, which includes the detailed recommendations to Council.  Appendix 2 has detail of the Finish (Area A) and Appendix 3 has detail of Lakeshore Road, west of Hiawatha Pkwy (Area B).

Mississauga News article (Feb. 24, 2010): Toronto race upsets marathon organizers.  Excerpt: "City officials are peeved that one of Toronto’s two marathons is moving its race to May, putting it in direct competition with the Mississauga Marathon. ... And, for the first time in its history, due to the calendar for 2010 and 2011, the marathon will not fall on Mother’s Day.  This comes as relief to City officials and race organizers who fielded numerous complaints that road closures disrupted Mother’s Day celebrations."

January 12, 2010: Further changes to the route, including closure of the north lanes of Lakeshore Road (instead of the south lanes) were received.  Note that only one northern lane is closed at the point of entering Memorial Park.

December 1, 2009: The following updated information was received from the Landmark Sport Group, which manages the Mississauga Marathon:

Since our inaugural year in 2004, the event has wound its way through various neighbourhoods and finished at Lakefront Promenade Park. With over 12,000 runners in 2009 we have come to a point where we have out grown our finish line, which has lead us to a proposed finish line at Memorial Park in Port Credit. Our initial thought was a move to JC Saddington Park but there were a number of variables that made that move nearly impossible. We feel that not only will a change to Memorial gives us ample space for growth of the event, it also brings more people into the downtown area of Port Credit.  Annually, the event attracts over 30,000 people to the area, which would be a great boost to local business owners.

I am happy to discuss the route with you in further detail but the proposed route would have the runners running east through Port Credit on Lakeshore Road, once they hit Lakefront Promenade they would turn south and pick up the Waterfront Trail as they head back West towards Memorial Park. At the conclusion of the run, runners will be coming off the Waterfront Trail onto Port street and across Stavebank onto the walking path, runners will then follow the path along the Credit River, underneath Lakeshore and into Memorial Park for the finish. The park will be lined with vendors and suppliers as runners are welcomed to the finish by thousands of spectators and admirers.

As you can imagine an event of this size requires precise logistical decisions and our experience over the last 6 years has equipped us with the tools to make those decisions and make this change possible. We have made our initial contact with Traffic and Police services in order to make sure the event is properly planned and covered by the necessary groups.

We have gone through the necessary steps with the City of Mississauga for approval and we are required to get letters of support from a number of the local associations ....

Would it be possible to provide us with a letter of support for our move to a Memorial Park finish line?

I appreciate your time and please feel free to contact me if you wish to discuss further or have any questions or concerns.
