Excerpt: "In 10 to 15 years, downtown Mississauga will be practically unrecognizable from what it is today if City Hall succeeds in implementing an ambitious masterplan for the area. The dramatic transformation proposed includes building two new streets: one on hydro lands running east-west north of Hwy. 403 and another — tentatively dubbed Main Street — that will punch through from Webb Dr. all the way to the entrance of Square One Shopping Centre. ... Also on the drawing board for the area are wide tree-lined sidewalks, protected bicycle lanes, on-street parking on both sides of roadways, and four new transit stations to accommodate light rail. Approximately 300 residents packed Council Chambers ... to get a sneak preview of the Downtown21 project." BACKGROUND Since its launch in January 2009, the Downtown 21 Master Plan has been progressing through a number of workshops with stakeholders and the public with a view to incorporating all the current thinking on what Downtown Mississauga needs to be and how the Plan transpires into reality. The DT21 initiative flows from the City's new Strategic Plan. The DT21 Plan proposes new infrastructure in the Downtown and provides a predictable development framework for landowners, developers, the City and public. The plan highlights a number of strategic opportunities and key actions in making Downtown Mississauga a truly sustainable and vibrant place, such as the creation of a new main street district that serves as an exciting urban destination for citizens to live, work, shop, and engage in cultural activities and special events.
